Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has stressed the importance of developing self-reliant gaushalas (cow shelters) as a significant contributor to the state’s economy. Speaking at a meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Gaushala Board at the Secretariat, Dr. Yadav outlined measures to enhance revenue generation from cow-related by-products such as dung, urine, and dairy products.
The Chief Minister suggested that gaushalas could leverage available space for solar energy production and urged promoting indigenous cattle breeds like Gir, Sahiwal, Malvi, and Nagauri across the state, including tribal regions.
Boosting Dairy & Veterinary Infrastructure
Dr. Yadav highlighted the need to increase the number of veterinarians proportionate to the livestock population to ensure better animal management and enhanced milk production. He emphasized coordinated efforts in animal husbandry, agriculture, horticulture, and renewable energy to raise farmer incomes and position Madhya Pradesh among the top states in milk production.

Progress and Initiatives
The Gaushala Board has directly transferred funds to gaushala committees’ bank accounts at the state level. Currently, 937 newly registered gaushalas provide shelter to 1.1 lakh cattle. During 2024-25, biogas-cum-organic fertilizer plants were established in Vidisha, Dewas, Agar-Malwa, Gwalior, Damoh, Satna, and Rewa. Municipal corporations in Gwalior, Indore, and Ujjain have initiated operations of large-scale gaushalas, while projects in Bhopal and Jabalpur are ongoing. The meeting also reviewed the progress of policies for establishing self-reliant gaushalas across the state.
Dr. Yadav reaffirmed that promoting indigenous breeds, leveraging renewable energy, and improving gaushala management would not only benefit the economy but also support sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods in Madhya Pradesh.
