Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the state-level ‘Wildlife Week’ at Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a week-long celebration of wildlife conservation and awareness.
As part of the initiative, Van Vihar National Park has officially been declared a no-vehicle zone, with the entry of private vehicles prohibited from October 1. In a step towards eco-friendly tourism, over 40 electric vehicles (e-vehicles) have been dedicated for use within the park. Bicycles will also be made available to enhance visitor experience without harming the park’s natural ecosystem.
Theme: ‘Human-Wildlife Coexistence’
This year’s Wildlife Week, held annually from October 1 to 7, is being observed under the theme “Human-Wildlife Coexistence”, emphasizing the importance of balance between development and nature.
Speaking at the launch event, CM Yadav said, “From today onwards, e-vehicles will be provided by the department to roam in the park. Over 40 vehicles have been dedicated to the park. Along with this, around ₹18.5 crore dividends have been distributed to tourism committees associated with the forest department.”
Honouring Forest Officers and Conservation Successes
During the event, the Chief Minister also honoured forest officers for their outstanding work, acknowledging their contributions to the state’s wildlife conservation efforts.
He highlighted recent wildlife successes in the state, noting that cheetahs are breeding successfully, vultures are thriving, and leopard populations are strong. “These developments are making Madhya Pradesh a leader in wildlife conservation in the country,” he added.
Rescue Centres and New Zoos in Pipeline
CM Yadav reaffirmed the government’s commitment to wildlife care across all ecosystems—land, water, and air. He announced plans to expand rescue centres and said that existing zoos in Gwalior, Indore, and Bhopal are already being used for wildlife health monitoring.
Future plans include:
- New zoos in Jabalpur and Ujjain
- Rescue centres at tiger reserves across the state
- Releasing crocodiles into the Narmada and Tawa rivers
Public Engagement Through Activities
To foster public awareness, a series of interactive programs will take place during Wildlife Week at Van Vihar, including:
- “Run for Wildlife”
- Bird and butterfly watching
- Debate competitions
- Youth parliaments
- Treasure hunts
- Other educational and recreational activities
These initiatives aim to engage citizens, especially youth, in understanding and supporting wildlife conservation efforts.
With the launch of electric mobility, the ban on private vehicles, and renewed focus on conservation and public involvement, Madhya Pradesh is setting a benchmark in sustainable eco-tourism and wildlife protection. The state continues to build on its legacy as a key player in India’s biodiversity and conservation movement.
