The government of Andhra Pradesh has suspended three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including one posted in the rank of Director General (DG), for their alleged involvement in the wrongful arrest and harassment of a Mumbai-based actor-model Ms. Kadambari Jethwani without conducting a proper investigation.
The concerned officers include former Intelligence Chief, IPS P. Sitharama Anjaneyulu (DG rank), former Vijayawada Police Commissioner IPS Kranti Rana Tata (Inspector General rank), and former Deputy Commissioner of Police, IPS Vishal Gunni (Superintendent rank)—who faced suspension following an inquiry into their role in the case, which has drawn significant public attention.
All three officers are among 16 IPS personnel who had been issued a memo earlier, ordering them to report to the Director General of the Police’s office twice a day without an official posting.
A government order (GO) detailing Officer Anjaneyulu’s suspension stated that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated due to “prima facie evidence” of “grave misconduct and dereliction of duty.” The GO read, “The government, after careful consideration of the report and having due regard to the circumstances of the case, came to a conclusion that there is prima facie evidence and that the disciplinary proceedings are warranted for his grave misconduct and dereliction of duty.“
Harassment From Police Authorities:
Ms. Jetwani alleged that some of the top IPS officers during YSRCP tenure tortured her family members by forcibly entering her house and seizing their phones and documents. The police had even lodged false cases against her, kept her in jail and subjected her to harassment for around six months.
The memo issued by the commissioner of police in the NTR Police Commissionerate read that a false case had been registered at the Ibrahimpatnam Police Station in Vijayawada, in 2024 against the actress and her family members.
Ms. Jetwani accused a YSRCP leader from Krishna of deceiving her under the false pretence of marriage. Following this, the politician, accompliced with influential IPS officers, allegedly threatened her and her family members. Reports said the YSRCP leader filed a complaint against Kadambari, accusing the actress and her family of criminal conspiracy and other charges. A police team from Vijayawada reportedly went to Mumbai and arrested the actress and her parents and brought them to Vijayawada.
