New Delhi: India’s NavIC Satellite System is becoming a key pillar of the country’s space and navigation infrastructure. According to an official report India has launched a total of 11 NavIC satellites, out of which 8 are currently functional.
The NavIC Satellite System provides accurate Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services across India and nearby regions. This system is designed to reduce dependence on foreign GPS services and strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical sectors like aviation, disaster management, and transportation.
What is the NavIC Satellite System
The Navigation with Indian Constellation is India’s own regional navigation system developed by ISRO.

It provides:
- Accurate location tracking
- Navigation support
- Precise timing services
NavIC covers India and areas up to 1500 km beyond its borders, making it highly useful for both civilian and strategic applications.
Current Status of NavIC Satellite System
As per the government data shared in Parliament:
- Total satellites launched: 11
- Functional satellites: 8
- Navigation signal satellites: 3
- Messaging service satellites: 5
This shows that the system is already operational and actively supporting multiple services.
Key Uses of NavIC in India
The NavIC Satellite System is designed for wide-ranging applications:
1. Civilian Navigation
It helps in accurate navigation for vehicles, smartphones, and public transport systems.
2. Disaster Management
NavIC plays an important role in early warning systems and rescue operations during disasters.
3. Maritime Operations
It helps fishermen with navigation and safety alerts while at sea.
4. Aviation Sector
Discussions are ongoing with the and the to integrate NavIC into air traffic management.
Role of GAGAN in Aviation
India’s satellite-based augmentation system, GAGAN is already operational.
- It improves navigation accuracy for aircraft
- Supports safe landing and air traffic operations
- Works alongside NavIC for enhanced performance
Expansion into Public Infrastructure
The Department of Space is actively expanding NavIC usage in:
- Real-time train tracking
- Fishing vessel communication systems
- Vehicle tracking for passenger safety
- Disaster alert dissemination systems
These applications aim to improve public safety and infrastructure efficiency.
Future Roadmap of NavIC Satellite System
The government is focusing on strengthening the NavIC ecosystem by:
- Completing the full satellite constellation
- Improving service quality based on user needs
- Introducing indigenous technologies like space-grade atomic clocks
- Enhancing technological self-reliance
