Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd (CIL), has announced the imposition of a “Singrauli Punarasthapan (Rejuvenation) Charge” of Rs 300 per tonne on coal dispatches from all its mines, effective May 1, 2025.
The charge is projected to generate approximately Rs 3,877.50 crore, according to NCL’s latest regulatory filing. The levy will be uniformly applied over the notified price of coal across all buyers.
NCL primarily operates in the coal-rich regions of Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli and Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra districts, supplying coal to both power and non-power sectors. Till January 2025, the company produced 117 million tonnes of coal, significantly contributing to Coal India’s overall output.
The decision aligns with ongoing efforts by CIL subsidiaries to enhance revenue streams and fund mine rehabilitation and resettlement initiatives in coal-bearing regions, industry sources said. The additional charge is expected to support sustainable mining operations and community development in affected areas.
