New Delhi, 5 July 2025 — Can Drones be launched from an underwater submarines? Yes, it is a fact, not fiction. Drones, a potent weapon in every war are being launched so far from the surface. But, now India will be launching them from a submarine. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India’s premier defence PSU, is developing an Underwater Launched UAV (ULUAV), an unmanned aerial vehicle or drone, to be launched from a submerged submarine.

These drones are aimed at enhancing maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. ULUAVs and autonomous underwater drone swarms are expected to boost India’s submarine intelligence and combat capabilities. They are likely to provide Indian Navy, a discreet and extended reach for surveillance. India’s First Drone Launched from Submarines

ULUAVs will deploy quickly and autonomously from moving submarines. Capabilities include long endurance, high range, and seaworthy launch and recovery. The ULUAV allows submerged submarines to discreetly surveil surface threats without compromising stealth.

New Domain of Submarine Tactics

DRDO Advanced Labs plan autonomous underwater drone swarms deployable from submarines in forthcoming projects. Equipped with AI-driven swarm algorithms, these systems enable cooperative mission execution and dynamic intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tasks. They will provide real-time data and situational awareness to the submarine and naval forces.

Underwater vehicles support Anti-Submarine Warfare, Mine Countermeasures, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and environmental monitoring. UUV swarms and swarming tactics form part of this next-gen undersea warfare doctrine.

ULAUVs carry inertial navigation, anti-jamming GPS, and edge sensors for acoustic, optical, or radar data. Swarm vehicles will feature acoustic communications and precision homing.

Projected Tactical Impact

ULUAVs and underwater drone swarms extend submarine situational awareness and electronic reach. Their deployment could enhance targeting, battle-damage assessment, mine clearance, and early warning, significantly boosting undersea deterrence and domain dominance.
