New Delhi: NHPC Limited, India’s largest hydropower producer, is currently constructing eight major hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 8,514 MW, giving a significant boost to the country’s clean energy sector. The total investment in these projects amounts to ₹98,107 crore, according to information shared by the Ministry of Power in the Lok Sabha.
Since its inception, NHPC has already commissioned 23 hydropower projects with an installed capacity of 7,771 MW, generating 23,015 million units (MUs) of electricity in the first seven months of 2025–26.
Major Projects Under Construction
The ongoing projects being directly executed by NHPC include:
- Subansiri Lower (2,000 MW), Arunachal Pradesh – Scheduled for commissioning in December 2026
- Dibang Multipurpose Project (2,880 MW), Arunachal Pradesh – Targeted for February 2032
- Teesta-VI (500 MW), Sikkim – Expected by September 2029
In addition, NHPC’s joint venture and subsidiary projects account for 3,134 MW, including:
- Pakal Dul (1,000 MW), Jammu & Kashmir – Expected December 2026
- Kiru (624 MW), Jammu & Kashmir – Expected December 2026
- Ratle (850 MW), Jammu & Kashmir – Projected November 2028
- Kwar (540 MW), Jammu & Kashmir – Planned March 2028
- Rangit-IV (120 MW), Sikkim – Slated April 2026
Collectively, these projects are expected to generate approximately 32,167 MUs annually once operational, significantly strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity.
Employment Generation and Grievance Redressal
The Ministry of Power highlighted that NHPC’s ongoing projects are providing employment opportunities to local communities, including Project Affected Families (PAFs), thereby supporting local income generation and entrepreneurship.
To ensure transparency and timely resolution of concerns, grievances related to project activities can be submitted through the CPGRAMS portal, offering a structured mechanism for redressal.
