Delhi: In a major step towards improving health and nutrition outcomes in underserved regions of India, NITI Aayog and UNICEF India signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) to strengthen strategic interventions in Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks. The agreement was formalized by Rohit Kumar, Additional Secretary and Mission Director, Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme, NITI Aayog, and Arjan de Wagt, Deputy Representative, UNICEF India.
The partnership aims to leverage the expertise of both institutions to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes, enhance community engagement, and strengthen health and nutrition systems at the block level.
Focus on Maternal and Child Nutrition in Underserved Regions
The collaboration will target high-priority regions identified under the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme, with a focus on:
- Improving maternal and child nutrition outcomes
- Enhancing uptake of ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services)
- Strengthening Anganwadi infrastructure
- Promoting nutrition literacy among communities
- Building capacity of frontline workers
Rohit Kumar highlighted that the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme has demonstrated the power of convergence, collaboration, and data-driven governance in accelerating development outcomes. Partnerships with UNICEF India are expected to further strengthen last-mile service delivery in these regions.
UNICEF India’s Technical Expertise and IMPAct4Nutrition Platform
Through the IMPAct4Nutrition (I4N) platform, UNICEF India will provide technical expertise and facilitate engagement with public and private sector stakeholders.
Key initiatives include:
- Mobilising CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) investments for nutrition-focused interventions
- Engaging industry associations and public sector enterprises in health and nutrition projects
- Promoting community participation and awareness in nutrition programs
- Supporting knowledge-sharing platforms to identify and scale best practices across districts
This approach ensures that interventions are evidence-based, scalable, and locally relevant.
Multi-Stakeholder Engagement for Sustainable Impact
The collaboration emphasises multi-stakeholder engagement, involving government agencies, civil society, businesses, and community actors. By pooling expertise and resources, the partnership aims to accelerate progress toward national nutrition and health goals and strengthen the implementation of block-level interventions.

The signing of the SOI reflects a shared commitment by NITI Aayog and UNICEF India to improve health and nutrition outcomes through coordinated action, strengthened partnerships, and innovative approaches.
This collaboration will ensure that Aspirational Districts and Blocks benefit from targeted, high-impact initiatives that improve maternal and child nutrition, health service delivery, and community engagement, setting a benchmark for other regions in India.
