New Delhi: In a major reassurance for citizens, the Central Government on Friday categorically dismissed rumours of an impending nationwide lockdown, stating that the situation across the country remains under control despite global uncertainties.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said there is no plan to impose a lockdown, urging people not to believe in misinformation. Speaking outside Parliament, he emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the situation at the highest level.
“There is no lockdown. The situation is under control and there is no need to panic. Prime Minister is personally monitoring developments,” Rijiju said.
Rumours Baseless, Says Government
Echoing similar sentiments, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that rumours regarding lockdown are completely false and no such proposal is under consideration.
“Let me state this clearly there is no proposal for a lockdown. People should remain calm and not spread panic,” Puri said.
He added that the government is actively tracking global developments, particularly in energy supplies, fuel availability, and essential commodities, to ensure that citizens do not face any disruption.
PM Modi Monitoring Situation Closely
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also urged citizens to remain calm and avoid panic buying or hoarding. Addressing Parliament earlier this week, he acknowledged that the ongoing global crisis may have long-term implications but stressed the importance of preparedness and unity.
“We have faced challenges like COVID-19 with collective strength before. We must remain prepared and united,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold discussions with Chief Ministers to review preparedness and coordination across states today.
Focus on Stability and Supply
The government has assured that fuel, energy, and essential supplies will remain uninterrupted, with continuous monitoring from the top leadership down to local levels. Strict instructions have also been issued to state governments to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth availability of goods. Officials highlighted that India has demonstrated resilience during past global crises and is well-prepared to handle emerging challenges without resorting to drastic measures like a lockdown.
Relief for Citizens
The clarification comes as a major relief for the public amid rising concerns fueled by social media rumours. The Centre reiterated that maintaining calm, avoiding misinformation, and cooperating with authorities are crucial during such times. With no lockdown on the horizon, normal life and economic activities are expected to continue uninterrupted across the country.
