Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), has signed a Green Ammonia Purchase Agreement (GAPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to supply green ammonia under the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The agreement was executed on March 30, 2026, marking a significant step in India’s transition to clean fuels and industrial decarbonization.

Key Details of the Green Ammonia Agreement

The agreement involves the annual supply of 70,000 metric tonnes (MTPA) of green ammonia, which will be delivered to Krishna Phoschem Limited, located in Meghnagar, Madhya Pradesh. SECI will act as the intermediary procurer for this supply under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme.

The SIGHT Scheme is a key initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission aimed at promoting large-scale production and utilization of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including green ammonia.

Strategic Importance for India’s Energy Transition

This partnership aligns with India’s broader goals under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to:

  • Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
  • Cut industrial carbon emissions
  • Develop domestic green fuel production capacity
  • Position India as a global hub for green hydrogen and derivatives

Green ammonia is emerging as a crucial decarbonization fuel for sectors such as fertilizers, shipping, and heavy industries, making this agreement significant for India’s sustainable industrial energy goals.

Milestone for NTPC Green Energy’s Clean Energy Portfolio

NTPC REL stated that the agreement represents a major milestone in its green hydrogen and green ammonia portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to India’s net-zero ambitions. The deal strengthens NTPC’s presence in the emerging green hydrogen value chain and highlights the accelerating adoption of clean fuels across industries.

“With global demand for green fuels rising rapidly, this partnership underscores India’s progress toward sustainable industrial energy solutions,” the company noted.
