On May 11, 2025, Oil India Limited (OIL) marked a significant milestone in Tripura’s energy landscape by spudding the Debtamura well at Location TUL-B of the DSF-II block AA/ONDSF/TULAMARA/2018. This is the first-ever oil and gas well to be drilled in Tripura under the Government of India’s Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP).
The well is located in the Baramura-Debtamura Reserve Forest, Gomati district, approximately 120 km from Agartala, near the Indo-Bangladesh international border.
The spudding ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Rupjyoti Phukan, RCE, OIL; Maj General (Retd.) Praveen Mathur, Advisor – Security (DGH); Sutirtha Paul, Joint Director, Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Govt of Tripura; and senior officials from OIL, GAIL, and other stakeholders.
The project has faced a range of challenges—from difficult terrain and narrow hilly roads to heavy monsoon floods and landslides. Despite this, OIL’s successful commencement of drilling reflects the resilience and commitment of the team, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
