New Delhi: ONGC has welcomed the appointment of Dr Neeraj Mittal, IAS, as the new Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), expressing confidence that his leadership will further strengthen India’s energy security and support the nation’s transition towards a sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem.
Key Leadership Transition in India’s Energy Administration
The Government of India has appointed Dr Neeraj Mittal as Secretary, MoPNG, marking an important leadership transition at a time when the country is intensifying efforts to enhance domestic energy production, reduce import dependence and accelerate clean energy initiatives. His appointment comes at a critical juncture for India’s energy sector, which is balancing growth, innovation and sustainability.

Extensive Administrative and Sectoral Experience
A 1992-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Dr Mittal was previously serving as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications. Over his distinguished career, he has worked extensively at both state and central government levels across diverse sectors such as e-Governance, transport, industrial promotion, commerce & industry, petroleum & natural gas, telecommunications and information technology.
He has held several key positions, including Director in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Director in the Ministry of Communications & IT, and Commissioner of the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency, contributing significantly to policy formulation and institutional reforms.
Strong Global Exposure and Policy Expertise
At the international level, Dr Mittal served as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director at the World Bank Group, representing India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. In this role, he was involved in corporate governance, project approvals and strategic policy discussions across World Bank institutions such as IBRD, IDA, IFC and MIGA, further strengthening his global perspective on development finance and governance.
