PESB Recommends Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande as Chairman & Managing Director of WCL

New Delhi: The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande for the position of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL). WCL is a vital subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), responsible for significant coal production in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

The recommendation now awaits formal approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), after which Dr. Pande will assume charge and lead WCL toward its strategic goals.

Rigorous Selection Process

Dr. Pande was selected following PESB Meeting No. 11/2026, where 12 senior executives from coal, railways, oil, and engineering sectors were interviewed.

Key contenders included:

  • Mr. Om Prakash Mishra – ED (Community Development), CIL
  • Mr. Kripa Shankar Singh – ED (Quality Management), CIL
  • Mr. Md Anzar Alam – Director (Finance), ECL
  • Mr. Pankaj Pandey – Director (Technical), MECL
  • Mr. Bikram Ghosh – Director (Finance), WCL

Dr. Pande emerged as the top candidate, bringing over 35 years of experience in the coal sector.

Currently serving as Director (Personnel) at WCL, Dr. Pande has been recognized nationally for his leadership and innovation:
