New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a leading central public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has successfully commissioned a key transmission infrastructure project through its wholly-owned subsidiary, POWERGRID Dharamjaigarh Transmission Limited.
The project, implemented under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism, comprises two critical regional expansion schemes – Western Region Expansion Scheme-XXVIII (WRES-XXVIII) and Western Region Expansion Scheme-XXIX (WRES-XXIX).
The entire project was declared commercially operational on April 8, 2025, and the formal Notification for Commercial Operation (DOCO) was received on May 23, 2025.
This significant milestone further consolidates PGCIL’s leadership in India’s power transmission sector. By strengthening the transmission infrastructure in western India, the project enhances regional grid reliability and facilitates the efficient transfer of power, helping meet the rapidly growing electricity demands of the region.
Strengthening the Backbone of India’s Power Sector
The timely execution of the WRES-XXVIII and XXIX schemes highlights PGCIL’s project execution capabilities and its strategic role in enabling energy security. These expansion schemes are part of a broader push to upgrade India’s national grid and improve power evacuation from generation sources to consumption centres.
“Such initiatives are essential to ensuring grid stability and meeting the future energy needs of the country,” a senior PGCIL official said, underlining the importance of large-scale infrastructure investments in India’s transition to a more robust and sustainable energy system.
PGCIL continues to be at the forefront of India’s transmission sector, managing over 1,76,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and substations with more than 4,80,000 MVA transformation capacity.
