New Delhi: In a major push to oil, gas, and infrastructure development in eastern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s (BPCL) City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal, worth approximately ₹1,950 crore. The launch is scheduled during his official visit to Bihar and West Bengal on July 18.
City Gas Project to Transform Energy Access
The BPCL CGD project will expand access to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households, commercial users, and industries, and offer Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) through retail outlets. The initiative is expected to generate employment, boost local infrastructure, and support clean energy goals in the region.
PM to Dedicate Key Sections of PM Urja Ganga Project
As part of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) initiative, the Durgapur–Kolkata section (132 km) of the Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, worth over ₹1,190 crore, will also be dedicated to the nation. The pipeline passes through Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Nadia districts of West Bengal and will deliver piped natural gas to lakhs of consumers, improving energy access and economic opportunity.
Clean Energy & Environmental Boost: FGD Systems
In line with the government’s commitment to clean energy, the Prime Minister will inaugurate Retrofitting Pollution Control Systems – Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) at:
- Durgapur Steel Thermal Power Station
- Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station (Damodar Valley Corporation)
These projects, valued at over ₹1,457 crore, aim to significantly reduce emissions and promote health and environmental security, while also creating employment in the clean-tech sector.
Rail Connectivity Boost: Purulia–Kotshila Rail Line Doubling
To enhance regional rail infrastructure, PM Modi will also dedicate the doubling of the Purulia–Kotshila rail line (36 km), built at a cost of ₹390 crore. This upgrade will:
- Improve connectivity between industrial hubs like Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and Dhanbad with Ranchi and Kolkata
- Facilitate faster and more efficient movement of goods and freight
- Support industrial logistics and economic growth in the mineral belt
