New Delhi: In a landmark administrative shift, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is set to move out of the historic South Block this September and relocate to the newly constructed Executive Enclave, part of the ambitious Central Vista redevelopment project. This marks the first time since India’s independence in 1947 that the PMO will function from a newly built facility, symbolizing the government’s efforts to move away from colonial-era infrastructure.
A New Era of Governance Infrastructure
The Executive Enclave, located in close proximity to the Prime Minister’s new residence, will also house the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, and a state-of-the-art conference centre – features long missing in the current setup.
The relocation is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, interdepartmental coordination, and security integration, while providing a work environment aligned with modern architectural and environmental standards.
Colonial-Era South and North Blocks to Become National Museums
As part of the wider transformation under the Central Vista Project, the iconic South and North Blocks – which have served as the nerve centre of Indian governance for nearly eight decades – will be repurposed into a world-class museum complex titled “Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya.”
This museum will showcase India’s civilizational journey, its struggles, cultural heritage, and future aspirations. The transformation is being carried out in collaboration with France Museum Development, a global leader in cultural heritage curation.
Modi: ‘Time to Move Beyond Colonial Legacy’
During the inauguration of several new Central Vista administrative buildings earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had underlined the symbolic and practical importance of this move. He pointed out that many existing government buildings lacked adequate space, ventilation, and natural light, making them unfit for modern governance.
“This new infrastructure reflects India’s identity, heritage, and vision for the future,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing that the new PMO will foster a culture of efficiency, transparency, and national pride.
PMO May Be Renamed to Reflect Public Service Focus
There is also speculation that the Prime Minister’s Office may be renamed as part of this transition, possibly to a title that emphasizes its public service character, distancing the institution from colonial bureaucratic structures and terminology. However, no official announcement on the renaming has been made yet.
