New Delhi: State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has achieved a significant sustainability milestone by meeting 50 percent of its total energy consumption through green energy sources, the company said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. The achievement marks a major step forward in Power Grid’s commitment to environmental sustainability and clean energy adoption.

Alignment with ESG Goals

The milestone is closely aligned with Power Grid’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) objectives, highlighting the company’s focused efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote responsible energy use. ESG parameters are increasingly used by investors and stakeholders to assess a company’s long-term sustainability, resilience, and governance standards.

Solar Initiatives Drive the Achievement

According to the filing, the green energy target was achieved through a combination of initiatives, including rooftop solar installations and solar photovoltaic (PV) plants across various locations. Notable among these is the solar PV plant at Nagda, which has contributed to increasing the share of renewable energy in the company’s overall consumption.

Nationwide Infrastructure, Unified Sustainability Effort

Power Grid operates an extensive transmission network spread across the country. Achieving the 50 percent green energy benchmark across such a wide and geographically diverse infrastructure underscores the scale of the company’s operational capabilities and its commitment to sustainability. The achievement is being viewed as a significant operational and environmental milestone for the central public sector enterprise.

Supporting India’s Renewable Energy Transition

As India’s largest power transmission company, Power Grid plays a critical role in integrating renewable energy into the national grid. Its continued focus on clean energy adoption not only strengthens its own ESG performance but also supports the country’s broader transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable energy future.
