Gurugram: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreement (JV&SHA) with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to develop a high-capacity cross-border power transmission system. The landmark signing ceremony took place in the presence of His Excellency Mr. Kulman Ghising, Hon’ble Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation of Nepal, and Mr. Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India. Also present at the occasion were Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Government of India, Dr. R.K. Tyagi, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of POWERGRID, and Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi, Director (Personnel) of POWERGRID.
New Power Transmission Corridors to Enhance Regional Connectivity
The newly signed agreement aims to establish two significant cross-border transmission links between India and Nepal. The first project is the Inaruwa (Nepal) – New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link, and the second is the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal) – Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link. Once operational, these projects will substantially increase the electricity exchange between both nations, providing a reliable and resilient power network that will contribute to improved energy security in the region.
The enhanced power transmission infrastructure will also support economic growth by ensuring a stable power supply, benefiting both countries’ industries and citizens. The projects are expected to foster deeper cooperation in the energy sector, leading to stronger bilateral ties between India and Nepal.

A Commitment to Regional Energy Security and Economic Growth
Mr. Manohar Lal, during the meeting, commended his Nepalese counterpart for this initiative and reiterated the historical friendship and collaboration between India and Nepal. He emphasized the immense potential of the partnership in areas such as hydropower development, urban infrastructure, and technical collaboration. Both ministers agreed that the energy sector would play a key role in driving regional economic progress and ensuring long-term energy security for both nations.
Mr. Kulman Ghising expressed his gratitude towards the Government of India for its continued support, particularly in strengthening transmission connectivity and technical collaboration, which is crucial for Nepal’s energy needs. The ministers also discussed other areas of potential cooperation, including capacity building and knowledge exchange in energy infrastructure and management.
POWERGRID’s Role in Expanding Regional Energy Networks
As of October 15, 2025, POWERGRID has commissioned 287 substations, operates over 1,80,864 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, and has a transformation capacity of 5,81,831 MVA.
