New Delhi: In a significant step towards industrial decarbonization, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aditya Birla Management Corporation Pvt Ltd (ABMCPL) to promote energy efficiency across the Aditya Birla Group’s vast manufacturing footprint.
The partnership marks a concerted effort to advance clean energy technologies, implement energy-saving initiatives, and drive net-zero goals across one of India’s largest and most diversified industrial conglomerates.
130+ Manufacturing Sites, 17.9 Million TOE Energy Use in Focus
The Aditya Birla Group currently operates over 130 manufacturing facilities, spanning sectors such as metals, cement, textiles, and chemicals, with a total energy consumption of 17.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) annually.
“Aditya Birla Group is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This MoU will significantly support our roadmap toward that goal,” EESL said in its official statement.
Scope of Partnership: Feasibility, Implementation & Training
Under the MoU:
EESL will conduct technical feasibility studies to identify energy-saving opportunities in selected manufacturing plants.
It will facilitate pilot projects, including industrial utility upgrades, waste heat recovery systems, and automation-based efficiency solutions.
EESL will also assist in capacity-building initiatives to equip plant operators and managers with knowledge of sustainable energy practices.
These efforts aim to standardize energy-saving interventions across the group, and unlock replicable models for industrial decarbonization.
Support from GEF-6 and UNEP
The studies and pilot initiatives under this collaboration will be supported by the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) and funded through the Global Environment Facility’s GEF-6 program, under UNEP Technical Assistance.
This multilateral support ensures technical rigor and international best practices in the proposed interventions.
Leadership Endorsement and Institutional Vision
EESL, a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, also recently appointed Akhilesh Kumar Dixit as its new CEO, signaling a renewed push for large-scale public-private collaboration on energy efficiency.
“The collaboration reflects our shared vision of reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions and enabling sustainable growth across Indian manufacturing,” the EESL spokesperson said.
