Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led the Punjab Cabinet meeting in Punjab where major decisions were taken, including approval of strict amendments to the ‘Jaagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill-2026’. The proposed legislation aims to ensure the dignity and sanctity of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and impose stringent punishment, including life imprisonment, on those found guilty of sacrilege.

The bill will be introduced in a special session of the Punjab Assembly on Monday.

Strong Law to Punish Acts of Sacrilege

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, several incidents of sacrilege in recent years have hurt religious sentiments and created social unrest. While sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita address such offences, the existing provisions are considered insufficient.

The amended bill proposes stricter punishment to deter such crimes and maintain communal harmony across the state.
