Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led the Punjab Cabinet meeting in Punjab where major decisions were taken, including approval of strict amendments to the ‘Jaagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill-2026’. The proposed legislation aims to ensure the dignity and sanctity of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and impose stringent punishment, including life imprisonment, on those found guilty of sacrilege.
The bill will be introduced in a special session of the Punjab Assembly on Monday.
Strong Law to Punish Acts of Sacrilege
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, several incidents of sacrilege in recent years have hurt religious sentiments and created social unrest. While sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita address such offences, the existing provisions are considered insufficient.
The amended bill proposes stricter punishment to deter such crimes and maintain communal harmony across the state.
Cabinet Meeting Chaired by CM Bhagwant Mann
The decision was taken during a high-level cabinet meeting chaired by CM Mann. The government emphasized that the move reflects its commitment to protecting religious sentiments and ensuring justice in cases involving sacrilege.
The proposed amendments are aimed at strengthening legal mechanisms and ensuring strict action against offenders.
₹25.40 Crore Approved for Asian Hockey Championship
In the same meeting, the cabinet approved a budget of ₹25.40 crore for hosting the Asian Hockey Championship in Punjab for the first time. The event is expected to boost sports infrastructure and international recognition for the state.
State-Wide Development and Public Outreach Initiatives
The government also discussed several ongoing development initiatives, including:
- Installation of street lights across villages in Punjab
- State-wide public outreach campaign “Samvad” marking four years of government work
- Youth engagement programs focusing on education and sports development
The administration highlighted its efforts to improve public services and infrastructure across sectors.
Preparations for 650th Birth Anniversary of Guru Ravidas Ji
CM Mann also held a meeting with saints and scholars regarding the upcoming 650th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Guru Ravidas Ji. He announced large-scale events including:
- Religious congregations and kirtan darbars
- Seminars and cultural programs
- Drone shows and marathons
- State-level celebration at Shri Khuralgarh Sahib
He said the government aims to spread the teachings of Guru Ravidas Ji globally with full community participation.

The Punjab government stated that the amended legislation and development initiatives together aim to strengthen law and order, protect religious sentiments, and promote social harmony across the state.
