Amritsar: The Punjab Government has issued a show cause notice to Amritsar Municipal Commissioner IAS Gulpreet Singh Aulakh over alleged dereliction of duty, citing persistent lapses in the city’s sanitation management.
Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh confirmed on Monday that the notice was served following a surge of public and media complaints regarding the deteriorating cleanliness in Amritsar over the past several months. The Municipal Commissioner has been directed to submit a detailed explanation within 24 hours.
“We have received numerous complaints from citizens and media regarding sanitation in Amritsar, which cannot be overlooked,” said Dr. Singh. “Taking the matter seriously, the Municipal Commissioner has been asked to explain his position immediately.”
The minister emphasized that Amritsar, being a sacred city of historical and spiritual significance, demands special attention to hygiene and public health infrastructure.
Dr. Singh also issued a broader directive to municipal authorities across Punjab, urging them to strengthen sanitation efforts as summer approaches. He highlighted the increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue, and called for proactive and comprehensive cleaning measures in urban areas.
Reaffirming the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on administrative negligence, Dr. Singh said, “The Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government is committed to delivering efficient and accountable governance. No laxity during duty hours will be tolerated.”
He warned that any further instances of negligence or carelessness by officials or employees would invite strict disciplinary action.
