Mohali: The Mohali Police have registered an FIR against Amir Singh, a retired employee of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation, for allegedly securing his government job in 1995 using a forged caste certificate. The development comes amid heightened scrutiny by the Punjab government’s Reservation Cell, which is investigating a spate of similar fraud cases involving forged caste documents.
FIR Registered Under Multiple IPC Sections
An FIR has been filed at the Phase-11 police station in Mohali under sections:
- 420 (cheating)
- 465 (forgery)
- 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating)
Police confirmed that Amir Singh, who also goes by the alias Karnail Singh, used a fake Scheduled Caste certificate to gain employment in January 1995. He eventually retired from service after completing his tenure.
Government Probe Triggers Legal Action
The case is a direct outcome of a larger investigation by the Punjab government’s Reservation Cell, which is currently reviewing multiple appointments allegedly made using bogus caste certificates across state departments.
Sources in the police department revealed that Singh’s forged certificate was flagged during this review, prompting a formal police complaint and subsequent registration of the FIR.
IRS Officer Son Also Under Scanner
Singh’s son, Harpreet Singh, an officer in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), is also alleged to have procured a fake caste certificate in April 2002. He is married to the daughter of former Punjab Police AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu, adding another layer of controversy to the case.
Linked to 2023 Courtroom Murder
The family had already drawn public attention following a sensational courtroom murder in August 2023, when Malvinder Singh Sidhu shot dead Harpreet Singh—his son-in-law—inside a Chandigarh district court during ongoing divorce proceedings.
Sidhu, who is currently lodged in jail, had long alleged that Harpreet and his in-laws used fake caste certificates to manipulate cases and secure government positions.
No Arrests Yet, Investigation Ongoing
As of now, no arrests have been made in the latest FIR against Amir Singh. Police officials have confirmed that a detailed probe is underway and further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Public Pressure Mounting in Punjab
The incident adds fuel to a growing demand from civil society and activist groups in Punjab for strict action against individuals who secured government jobs or benefits through fraudulent caste claims.
Senior police officials emphasized that the Reservation Cell’s audit may lead to more such cases being unearthed in the coming weeks.
