Dehradun: In a major step towards transforming the urban landscape of the state capital, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed authorities to accelerate work on three mega urban development projects — Indira Market Redevelopment, Aadhat Bazaar Development, and Tehsil Complex Multi-Level Parking.
Acting on these directions, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) is executing the projects on a war footing to give Dehradun a planned, safe, and modern infrastructure framework.
Housing Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar conducted a joint site inspection of all three key projects on Saturday, reviewing progress and issuing strict instructions to ensure quality, safety, transparency, and timely completion.
Indira Market Redevelopment: Towards a Modern Commercial Hub
The Indira Market Redevelopment Project aims to modernize one of the city’s busiest commercial centers.
Key Highlights:
- Target to complete the project by December to facilitate early allotment to affected shopkeepers.
- Construction of two basement levels in C and D blocks completed; upper floors under progress.
- Three-level basement parking with capacity for approximately 1,050 cars.
- Shop construction to begin after basement completion to ensure smooth relocation of traders.
Officials emphasized that construction quality, structural safety, and strict adherence to timelines remain top priorities.
Aadhat Bazaar Project: Organized Market & Wider Roads
The Aadhat Bazaar redevelopment is considered crucial for easing congestion in the city center.
Road Expansion Plan:
- The stretch between Tehsil Chowk and Saharanpur Chowk will be widened to 24 meters.
- Currently, the road width ranges between 16–18 meters, leading to frequent traffic congestion.
New Market Infrastructure:
- A new organized Aadhat Bazaar is being developed at Haridwar Bypass, Kargi, on 7.7 hectares of land.
- Structured layout for different mandi categories.
- Multi-level parking facility with capacity for around 650 vehicles.
- Additional facilities include warehouses, office spaces, parks, sewage treatment plant (STP), overhead water tank, and electricity-water infrastructure.
Authorities have been directed to maintain the highest standards of durability and engineering quality.
Tehsil Complex Multi-Level Parking: Permanent Solution to Traffic Woes
Considering the chronic traffic congestion from Paltan Bazaar to Tehsil Chowk, the Tehsil Complex Multi-Level Parking Project is being treated as a priority initiative.
Project Features:
- Construction of a modern Tehsil building.
- Multi-level car parking facility with capacity for nearly 1,000 vehicles.
- Land coordination discussions ongoing with Darbar Sahib authorities.
Officials have been instructed to expedite coordination processes and remove technical and administrative bottlenecks to bring the project onto the ground at the earliest.
Focus on Transparency and Regular Monitoring
During the inspection, Housing Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar stressed that no compromise would be tolerated on quality, safety, or deadlines. He directed officials to ensure transparency in execution and resolve technical and administrative challenges immediately. Regular monitoring of project progress has also been prioritized.
Senior MDDA officials, including Secretary Mohan Singh Barniya and other engineering and project authorities, were present during the inspection.
A New Urban Identity for Dehradun
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dhami, Dehradun is witnessing a new phase of structured urban planning. These three mega projects are expected to significantly improve traffic management, strengthen the commercial ecosystem, and enhance public convenience.
Once completed, the initiatives are likely to redefine the city’s infrastructure and provide long-term relief from congestion and unplanned development.
