Mumbai: In a significant move for Maharashtra’s governance, the Centre’s Department of Personnel and Training has approved a three-month extension for the state’s Chief Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Meena. This extension comes after his current tenure was set to end on August 31, 2025. Meena will now continue in his post until November 30, 2025, just ahead of his scheduled retirement, making him a key figure in overseeing crucial administrative operations in the state.
Key Focus on Local Body Elections and Major Administrative Reforms
The extension comes at a pivotal time as the state prepares for local body elections, which are expected to take place in October and November 2025. Sources have confirmed that Rajesh Kumar Meena will play a critical role in managing and coordinating various departments to ensure the smooth conduct of these elections. In addition, the veteran bureaucrat will lead the implementation of significant governance reforms under the state’s ongoing 150-day program.
Meena’s extension will also coincide with the execution of the state’s long-term economic and infrastructural goals, including the implementation of the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth over Rs 15 lakh crore that were signed during the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit held in Davos earlier this year.

Rajesh Kumar Meena: A Career of Administrative Excellence
Rajesh Kumar Meena, a senior IAS officer from the 1988 batch, assumed the position of Chief Secretary on June 30, 2025, succeeding Sujata Saunik. His career has been marked by several critical roles across multiple state departments, including Revenue, Cooperation, Rural Development, Industry, Energy, and Labour.
Meena’s tenure has been brief, as he was set to retire in August 2025. However, in a significant decision by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the extension was granted, allowing Meena to see through a number of essential projects and reforms. His leadership will focus on administrative streamlining, procedural reforms at the grassroots level, and bolstering the state’s mission to achieve a trillion-dollar economy by 2030.
Challenges Ahead: Farmers’ Protests and Trilingual Formula
One of the most pressing issues that Meena will tackle in the coming months is the ongoing protests by farmers and opposition parties against the Rs 86,300 crore Shaktipeeth Mahamarg project. Meena’s role will be to mediate and ensure the effective implementation of this vital infrastructure project.
Furthermore, even though the Maharashtra government recently scrapped its controversial decision to introduce Hindi as a third language in schools, Meena will be tasked with overseeing the high-level committee headed by Dr. Narendra Jadhav. This committee is tasked with exploring the viability of the trilingual language formula, which continues to spark debate across the state.
The Successor: I.S. Chahal’s Wait for Chief Secretary Role
With Meena’s extension, the waiting period for senior IAS officer I.S. Chahal to assume the Chief Secretary position has been prolonged. Chahal, who is currently serving as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), was initially seen as the likely successor to Meena. However, with the extension granted to Meena, Chahal’s potential appointment will be delayed until after Meena’s retirement in November 2025. Chahal, who will retire in January 2026, is one of the top candidates for the Chief Secretary role post-Meena.
The political dynamics and bureaucratic shifts could see further changes as the state’s administrative hierarchy continues to evolve in the coming months.
Rajesh Kumar Meena’s Legacy
Before his appointment as Chief Secretary, Meena held several prestigious positions, including Additional Chief Secretary in the Revenue and Cooperation departments, Principal Secretary of Water Supply and Cleanliness, and Commissioner of the Integrated Child Development Scheme. His vast experience, particularly in managing large-scale state projects, has earned him a reputation for pragmatic decision-making.
Pivotal Leadership
Rajesh Kumar Meena’s three-month extension will not only allow him to steer Maharashtra through an important election period but will also provide crucial leadership for several major state initiatives. With key reforms, infrastructural projects, and economic goals on the horizon, Meena’s leadership will be pivotal in shaping the future of Maharashtra.
