Patna: Bihar has marked a major milestone in the realm of sports infrastructure with the near-completion of the Rajgir Sports Complex-cum-Sports University, which not only stands as the first sports university in the state but also the sixth in India. This ambitious project by the Building Construction Department is transforming Rajgir into a hub of athletic excellence and global sporting events.
A One-of-a-Kind Multi-Sport Facility
The Rajgir Sports Complex features facilities for 33 indoor and outdoor sports, including international-level arenas for wrestling, boxing, judo, taekwondo, athletics, football, cricket, hockey, and more. It also boasts a 50×25 meter swimming pool, cycling track, and areas for field events like long jump, pole vault, and shotput.
A world-class hockey turf, equipped with astro-turf from Australia and a German automated sprinkler system, has already hosted the Women’s Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, demonstrating the facility’s readiness for elite competitions.

Modern Infrastructure with Academic and Residential Amenities
A three-story academic building houses the Bihar Sports University, administrative offices, and a 242-seat auditorium. Athlete accommodation includes:
- A 149-room boys’ hostel
- A 78-room girls’ hostel
- A 100-capacity transit hostel
- A 324-seater mess
- Dedicated residential spaces for staff, trainers, and university officials
In addition to sports training, the complex provides in-house medical treatment facilities for sports-related injuries, ensuring comprehensive athlete care.
From Vision to Reality – Built to International Standards
According to Kumar Ravi, Secretary of the Building Construction Department, “Rajgir Sports Complex is an ambitious and prestigious project. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, our teams delivered most of the facilities on schedule, maintaining global standards.”
The design of the campus draws inspiration from Nalanda University, combining modern functionality with aesthetic and cultural significance.
Host to National Events, Eyeing Global Glory
The Rajgir Sports Complex recently hosted five events during the Khelo India Youth Games and is now preparing to host the Men’s Asia Cup Hockey Tournament in 2025.
In its final phase, the complex is constructing a 40,000-capacity international cricket stadium, expected to be completed soon. This stadium is poised to become a premier venue for future national and international cricket matches.
A New Era for Sports in Bihar
With world-class infrastructure, high-performance facilities, and academic backing, the Rajgir Sports Complex is positioning Bihar as a serious contender in India’s sporting future. It symbolizes the state’s growing investment in youth, fitness, and international sports diplomacy.
