15-Year Shutdown Ends: CCL’s Rajhara Colliery in Palamu Reopens, Creates Employment in Jharkhand

CCL Reopens Rajhara Colliery in Palamu; Coal Production, Jobs to Rise
Indian Masterminds Stories

Palamu, Jharkhand: Coal mining operations resumed at Central Coalfields Limited’s (CCL) Rajhara Colliery in Palamu district on Saturday after remaining shut for nearly 16 years. The reopening ceremony was inaugurated by Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey, highlighting the strategic importance of the project for regional development and India’s energy security.

Reopening After 15 Years

The Rajhara Colliery, which had been closed since 2010, was officially revived with a ceremonial puja and inauguration. The mine’s reopening is expected to:

  • Create employment opportunities for local youth and skilled workers.
  • Strengthen domestic coal production.
  • Contribute to national energy security and reduce coal imports.

Union Minister Dubey emphasized that the project has long-standing regional significance and that persistent efforts at multiple levels led to the resumption of mining activities.

Production Capacity and Resources

The Rajhara block contains an estimated 4.5 million tonnes of Grade-9 coal. CCL Chairman and Managing Director Nilendu Kumar Singh stated:

  • Normal production capacity: 0.30 million tonnes per year.
  • Potential to scale up to 0.50 million tonnes annually.
  • Environmental clearance valid until February 2037.
  • Consent to Operate valid until March 2026, with renewal underway.

Officials noted that the colliery’s operations will significantly contribute to regional development, industrial growth, and nation-building, aligning with the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

Strategic Importance

A press statement from CCL highlighted-

“Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the coal and mining sector is becoming more modern, transparent, and self-reliant. The revival of Rajhara Colliery adds momentum to the resolve for a self-reliant India.”

The event was attended by Palamu MP Vishnu Dayal Ram and senior CCL officials.

The revival of this mining asset is part of the government’s broader strategy to boost domestic coal production, reduce dependency on imports, and meet the country’s growing energy demand.
