Jabalpur: Paying heartfelt tribute to the legendary warrior queen Rani Durgavati on her Balidan Diwas, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav hailed her as an enduring symbol of bravery, courage, and leadership. Speaking at a commemorative function at Narrai Nala near Jabalpur, Dr. Yadav emphasized the need to preserve and promote the inspiring legacy of the Gondwana queen for future generations.
Rani Durgavati: Embodiment of Courage and Women Empowerment
“Rani Durgavati, true to her name, was a form of Maa Durga in human history. She was trained in warfare, horse riding, and swordsmanship nearly 500 years ago – long before the term ‘women empowerment’ gained global traction,” said CM Yadav.
He highlighted that the tribal queens, including Rani Avantibai, had laid the foundation of women’s leadership in India centuries ago. Their stories remain powerful examples of valor and self-determination. “Even Western countries often seen as culturally advanced lag behind when we speak of such historic courage and heritage,” he added.

Modern Wildlife Rescue Centre and Zoo in Rani Durgavati’s Name
In a significant announcement, CM Yadav declared the construction of a modern zoo and wildlife rescue centre in Thakurtal, Jabalpur, on the lines of Bhopal’s Van Vihar. This center will be named after Rani Durgavati, symbolizing her deep connection with nature and her legacy in the Gondwana region.
“Thakurtal will also be developed as a major tourist destination,” the Chief Minister added, positioning it as both a conservation and cultural heritage site.
Stories of Durgavati’s Heroism to Enter School Curriculum
To deepen public knowledge and inspire youth, the government plans to integrate stories of Rani Durgavati’s bravery into school textbooks. “She fought 52 battles and won 51, defeating the Mughals thrice. The Gondwana empire under her leadership covered 23,000 villages,” Dr. Yadav noted.
She also led pioneering efforts in water conservation and development, further justifying her recognition as a leader far ahead of her time.
Support for Folk Artists and Cultural Initiatives
Chief Minister Yadav announced-
- ₹5 lakh to the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation to support events like the Rani Durgavati Marathon.
- ₹5,000 per folk artist for those who performed during the event, recognizing their role in preserving tribal and local heritage.
During the program, winners of the Rani Durgavati Marathon were felicitated with cheques and certificates by the Chief Minister.
Empowerment and Representation of Tribal Women
Drawing a link between the past and present, Dr. Yadav acknowledged the current President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, as a proud representative of the tribal community. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to 33% reservation for women in upcoming assembly elections, reflecting Rani Durgavati’s legacy in contemporary policy.
Development of the Samadhi Sthal
Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh also addressed the gathering, revealing that the first cabinet meeting under CM Yadav’s leadership was held in Gondwana and dedicated to Rani Durgavati. A budget of ₹10 crore has already been approved for the development of her Samadhi Sthal.
Singh said that Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has been requested for additional funds to transform the site into a national symbol of women’s sacrifice and strength.
“This site will become a beacon of India’s women power—not just for Mahakoshal, but for the entire nation,” Singh added.
