New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Ravi Ranjan, currently serving as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of State Bank of India (SBI), as Managing Director (MD) of SBI. He will hold the position until his superannuation on September 30, 2028, according to an official order.
Extensive Banking Experience of Over Three Decades
Ravi Ranjan brings with him over 33 years of rich banking experience, having begun his career as a Probationary Officer with SBI in 1991. Over the years, he has held a wide range of leadership and operational roles across domestic and international banking operations, contributing significantly to the bank’s growth and stability.
His long association with SBI reflects deep institutional knowledge and strong expertise across multiple banking verticals.

Leadership Role in Global Markets
Prior to his elevation as Managing Director, Ravi Ranjan was heading SBI’s Global Markets division as Deputy Managing Director. In this role, he was responsible for managing the bank’s entire investment portfolio, with investments exceeding ₹16.5 trillion (approximately USD 196 billion).
His stewardship of the Global Markets unit played a key role in strengthening SBI’s treasury operations, investment strategy, and risk management framework.
Key Assignments Across India and Overseas
Between 1991 and 2010, Ravi Ranjan held several critical assignments covering diverse areas of banking, including:
- Head of the Account Maintenance Team (AMT) for Shipping and Aviation sectors
- Research Officer at the State Bank Academy
- Branch Manager at five different SBI branches across various regions of India
- Overseas assignment in California, providing him with international banking exposure
These roles have equipped him with hands-on experience in retail banking, corporate banking, research, training, and international operations.
Strong Academic and Professional Credentials
Ravi Ranjan possesses strong academic and professional qualifications, including:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA) from MDI, Gurugram
- M.Sc. in Botany from Patna University
- CAIIB (Part I & II) certification
His academic background complements his extensive professional experience, enabling him to handle complex financial and strategic responsibilities at the country’s largest bank.
