Patna: The Bihar government has initiated the construction of the Raxaul–Haldia Greenfield Expressway, a six-lane world-class highway aimed at providing direct and faster road connectivity from Bihar to West Bengal. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha confirmed the development, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening infrastructure and promoting industrial growth.
Expressway to Connect 12 Districts in Bihar
According to Deputy CM Vijay Sinha, the expressway will pass through 12 districts of Bihar, including:
- East Champaran
- Shivhar
- Sitamarhi
- Darbhanga
- Muzaffarpur
- Samastipur
- Begusarai
- Khagaria
- Lakhisarai
- Munger
- Jamui
- Banka
The six-lane highway is being constructed under India’s Bharatmala project, with full support from the central government.

Key Features of the Raxaul–Haldia Expressway
- Length and Capacity: Six-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway
- Route: Connects Raxaul (Nepal border) in Bihar to Haldia Port in West Bengal, passing through Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal
- Travel Time Reduction: Current travel time of 19–20 hours will be reduced to 10–11 hours, significantly improving trade and passenger movement
- Economic Impact: Facilitates industrial growth, enhances Nepal and Northeast India connectivity, and boosts regional trade
Land Acquisition and Construction Progress
The Bihar government has already announced compensation for land acquisition, and the process has officially begun. Once completed, the expressway is expected to serve as a major transport and economic corridor, supporting both freight and passenger traffic across Eastern India.
Strategic Importance
Deputy CM Vijay Sinha emphasized that the Raxaul–Haldia Expressway will act as a “major pathway for connectivity and industrial development” under the NDA government, linking remote districts of Bihar to key ports and national highways, and strengthening India’s cross-border trade with Nepal.
