The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Tuesday that it will soon issue new banknotes of Rs 100 and Rs 200 denominations, featuring the signature of the newly-appointed RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra.
In a statement, the RBI clarified that the design of the new notes will be identical to the Rs 100 and Rs 200 banknotes currently in circulation under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.
The central bank assured that all previously issued Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes, regardless of the signature, will remain valid and continue to be accepted as legal tender.
Governor Malhotra, who took office in December 2024, succeeded Shaktikanta Das following the completion of his extended tenure as RBI Governor.
This move marks the first change in the signature on Indian banknotes under the leadership of Governor Malhotra, signaling a new chapter in the country’s monetary policy.
