Raipur: Chhattisgarh’s General Administration Department has officially appointed Rita Shandilya as the permanent Chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC), making history as the first woman to hold this prestigious position. Previously serving as the acting chairman, Shandilya, a retired IAS officer from the 2002 batch, has had a distinguished career in various senior administrative roles.
A Woman at the Helm of CGPSC
Rita Shandilya’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of CGPSC. She becomes the 8th chairperson of the commission, following the tenure of Taman Sonwani. Shandilya’s rise to the top post comes amid a series of scandals involving the commission, including a major corruption case that led to investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A Long and Diverse Career in Administration
Throughout her career, Shandilya has held key administrative positions in several departments. She served as Secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management, Technical Education, and Employment Departments, where she managed critical state functions. Her extensive experience in governance has positioned her well to take on the responsibility of revitalizing the commission.
Turning a New Page: Tackling Transparency and Trust
During the tenure of the former Chairman Taman Sonwani, CGPSC was embroiled in a major scam that rocked the state, becoming a political controversy during the assembly elections. Following this, many senior officers, including Sonwani, were arrested after a thorough CBI investigation.
With Shandilya’s appointment, the state government hopes for a fresh start under her leadership, aiming to restore transparency and credibility to the CGPSC. Experts believe that Shandilya’s primary challenge will be to rebuild the trust of both the youth and the public, ensuring that the commission operates efficiently and without controversy.
Promises of Reform and Change
The appointment of Shandilya also signals the government’s commitment to reforming CGPSC’s processes, especially in ensuring timely examinations and recruitment procedures. As the first woman in this role, her leadership is expected to usher in administrative reforms, with the aim of modernizing the functioning of the commission and addressing the ongoing concerns related to competitive examinations.

The Road Ahead: A New Chapter for CGPSC
Shandilya’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for CGPSC. With a commitment to making the commission more accountable, transparent, and trustworthy, Shandilya has the daunting task of restoring public confidence after the scandals that tarnished the commission’s reputation. Administrative reforms and effective implementation of recruitment policies are now more important than ever for the commission’s credibility.
The Chhattisgarh government expressed confidence in Shandilya’s leadership and is optimistic that her tenure will end the controversies that have plagued the commission for years. The state’s hopes are high that the commission will soon regain its stature as a trusted body for recruiting the best talent for state services.
