New Delhi: In a strategic move aimed at transforming India’s railway infrastructure, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) and Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday to drive innovation, strengthen manufacturing capabilities, and accelerate modernisation across the sector.
Strengthening India’s Rail Ambitions
The collaboration marks a significant step under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with both public and private sector players aiming to unlock new opportunities through synergy and joint execution.
“This collaboration is a testament to our shared commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and advancing India’s leadership in rail mobility and infrastructure development,” said Pardeep Gaur, Chairman and Managing Director of RVNL.
Joint Bidding and Global Outreach
The partnership will allow RVNL and Texmaco to jointly bid for high-value projects – both domestic and international – related to freight rolling stock, including the manufacture and maintenance of wagons and related components. These bids may be through nomination, open competition, or limited tenders.
“This approach will unlock new market access and synergy-driven delivery, especially where Texmaco may not independently meet certain qualification thresholds,” the companies noted.
Focus Areas: Track Laying, Electrification, and Urban Transit
Together, RVNL and Texmaco plan to collaborate on large-scale infrastructure projects, including-
- Track laying
- Railway electrification
- Metro rail initiatives
These efforts are intended to contribute significantly to the modernisation of India’s rail network and support the government’s vision for high-performance, smart infrastructure.
Next-Gen Manufacturing and Smart Infrastructure
Texmaco MD Sudipta Mukherjee called the partnership a “powerful step” toward shaping the future of Indian railways, stating:
“Together, we aim to unlock new frontiers in manufacturing, innovation, and engineering excellence.”
The partnership plans to set up a technologically advanced wheel-set manufacturing facility, focusing on-
- Technology transfer
- Localisation
- Integration of Indian supply chains
Reviving Idle Rail Assets
Another critical component of the partnership involves reviving underutilised Ministry of Railways manufacturing units, repurposing them for the production of metro and self-propelled bogies, including:
- VB (Vestibule Bogies)
- EMU (Electric Multiple Unit)
- MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit)
Urban Transit Expansion
The MoU also includes plans to develop metro coaches and trainsets that cater to the growing demand for urban mass transit. The emphasis will be on high-quality, cost-effective, and domestically produced alternatives to reduce import reliance and enhance manufacturing self-sufficiency.
