Salem: The Salem Steel Plant (SSP) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) inaugurated a new 100-ton electronic weighbridge to streamline operations at its Steel Melting Shop (SMS). The inauguration ceremony took place on 29 August 2025 at 9:30 AM opposite the Open Scrap Yard of SMS.
The facility was inaugurated by Sri P.K. Sarkar, Executive Director, SSP, in the presence of senior executives, the supplier’s representative, employees, and contract workers.
Strengthening SMS Production
The weighbridge has been installed at a project cost of ₹46.78 lakh. It is designed to facilitate faster and more efficient handling of scrap material, a critical input for SMS production.
By enabling direct weighing near the scrap yard, the new facility will reduce delays and ensure smoother supply of raw materials to the furnace area.
Operational Benefits
According to SSP officials, the new weighbridge brings multiple advantages:
- Faster shifting of scrap materials from the yard to the furnace area.
- Fuel savings through reduced transportation distance and time.
- Enhanced safety by lowering spillage of scrap on main roads.
- Reduced congestion around existing weighbridges near the truck gate.
- Improved efficiency in existing weighbridges for dispatching finished materials to customers.
