Mumbai: The Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Andheri has directed Amboli police to investigate a criminal defamation complaint filed by IRS officer Sameer Wankhede against model Namrata Shroff. The complaint pertains to allegedly defamatory content posted on social media, allegedly linked to high-profile narcotics cases Wankhede handled – including the one that emerged following the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Wankhede Alleges Damage to Reputation
Wankhede, a senior Indian Revenue Service officer who earlier served as the Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), alleged that Namrata Shroff posted several defamatory messages from a fake microblogging account, causing irreparable damage to his personal and professional reputation.
Filed through advocate Malika Shirzade, the complaint claimed that the social media posts were part of a targeted campaign aimed at discrediting him, despite Shroff having no legal standing or connection to the cases discussed.
Posts Linked to High-Profile Drug Cases
The complaint noted that Shroff’s posts made repeated references to sensitive narcotics investigations and were crafted with mala fide intent. Wankhede also claimed that internal research helped trace the source of the posts back to Shroff, who he alleges was operating a fake account.
“These posts were defamatory in nature and intended to tarnish my public image and discredit my role in key investigations,” Wankhede is reported to have stated in the complaint.
Action Sought Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
Wankhede has sought legal action under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with criminal defamation.
The magistrate has now directed Amboli police to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit their report by November 30, 2025. The court will decide the next course of action based on the outcome of the police investigation.
