New Delhi: Harish Duhan, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), has emphasized that coal remains the backbone of India’s energy ecosystem, even as the country accelerates its transition to renewable energy sources.
Speaking at an event organized to celebrate Vishwakarma Jayanti and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, Duhan said coal continues to power industries, households, and infrastructure, playing a vital role in driving the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

“Coal continues to remain the backbone of India’s energy ecosystem, meeting the needs of industries, households, and infrastructure, and driving the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat,” said Harish Duhan.
He praised the “coal warriors”—the workers who mine this critical resource under challenging conditions. Their “tireless contribution,” he said, ensures energy security for the nation and supports economic growth.

Honouring 75 Workers with Vishwakarma Awards
SECL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), felicitated 75 workers with the Vishwakarma Awards during the event. The awards recognize the dedication and commitment of coal workers, whose efforts are central to India’s energy supply chain.
The event was graced by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, who commended SECL’s initiative to honour workers on Vishwakarma Jayanti. He noted that the event gains added significance as it coincided with the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
