New Delhi: In a key decision ahead of his scheduled retirement, the Modi government has approved the extension of service for Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS:1989:SK).
According to an official order from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued on Friday, he will continue in office until August 22, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) cleared the extension under the provisions of FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
Extension Marks Confidence in Continuity and Stability
Mr Mohan was initially appointed as Union Home Secretary on August 14, 2024, and took charge on August 22, 2024, following the retirement of Ashok Bhalla (IAS:1984:AM), who had completed his full five-year tenure. Mohan’s extension reflects the Centre’s trust in his leadership during a time when internal security, border management, and cyber threats remain key policy priorities.
A seasoned bureaucrat of the Sikkim cadre, Mohan has held several critical positions in both the state and central governments, particularly in home affairs, personnel, and cultural administration. His term extension ensures continuity in internal security administration during a politically sensitive period leading up to several state elections and the ongoing implementation of key policy reforms.
