Hyderabad: In a strong endorsement of the Centre’s latest move, senior IPS officer VC Sajjanar has hailed the decision to ban online betting and money gaming apps as a “historic step,” marking a major victory for his sustained anti-betting campaign. The officer, currently serving as Managing Director of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), has been a vocal critic of online betting platforms for over six months.
“A Move That Will Save Lives and Protect Society”
In an official statement, Sajjanar, an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-ranked officer, praised the Centre’s proactive step in curbing the growing menace of online betting, especially among youth.
“The Central Government’s decision to ban online betting, which has been destroying countless young lives, is a highly welcome and historic step. This move will not only save many lives but also protect the very social fabric of our society from the dangerous consequences of gambling addiction,” Sajjanar said.
SayNoToBettingApps: A Campaign That Made Noise
Over the past six months, the 1996-batch IPS officer ran a social media campaign under the hashtag #SayNoToBettingApps, raising awareness about the risks of gambling, financial ruin, and mental health deterioration. He consistently posted videos, testimonials, and advisory messages, gaining traction and public support.
His efforts also helped trigger institutional focus on the issue in Telangana, leading to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to probe online betting rackets operating in the state.
Rising Toll: Betting-Linked Suicides in Telangana
Sajjanar’s campaign was driven by growing concern over multiple suicide cases linked to online betting. At least seven persons in Telangana reportedly died by suicide in recent months after suffering massive financial losses on betting platforms.
The victims, mostly young men, were lured by quick money schemes promoted via aggressive online advertising, influencers, and fake success stories.
Broader Impact of the Ban
The Centre’s ban, now lauded by law enforcement officers and child rights activists alike, is expected to curb gambling addiction, prevent financial exploitation, and shut down illegally operating platforms that have thrived in legal grey zones for years.
While implementation challenges remain, officials believe the step lays a strong legal and moral foundation for building a more secure digital environment.
