Based on a complaint by a UPSC aspirant, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has ordered Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and a staff of ed-tech company BYJU’s to compensate her.
The commission has asked the local manager of BYJU’s and SRK to return Rs 1.08 lakh in fees deposited by complainant Priyanka Dixit at the time of admission in 2021 along with 12 per cent annual interest.
In its order passed on Wednesday, it also said that Rs 5,000 must be given to her as litigation cost and Rs 50,000 as compensation for financial and mental agony.
The compensation has to be paid “jointly or severally” by the local manager and the actor as each party involved is equally liable.
Ms. Dixit alleged that she approached BYJU’s for coaching after coming across an advertisement by SRK on January 13, 2021.
BYJU’s promised her coaching by good teachers starting January 14, 2021. But nothing happened. She then asked her admission be cancelled and demanded a refund. However, her repeated requests fell on deaf ears.
