Shivamogga: A targeted operation by the Shivamogga Forest Department in the Kumadvathi Reserve Forest near Ripponpet led to the arrest of three suspected poachers on Thursday. The raid struck a blow to illegal hunting activities in the Mugudthi Wildlife Zone, a key part of Karnataka’s Malnad region.
Swift Action Follows Routine Patrols
Forest personnel noticed suspicious movement during routine patrols, prompting an immediate alert to senior officials. Forest Officer Pavan Kumar N led a swift raid that caught the suspects by surprise. Authorities seized a country-made firearm, ammunition, and an Alto car used by the poachers.
Two members of the five-person group remain at large. Investigations are ongoing to track them down.

Charges Under Wildlife Protection Act
The three apprehended individuals, residents of Battemallappa and Balasagodu villages, now face charges under the Wildlife Protection Act. Officials confirmed that the suspects allegedly planned to poach in the ecologically sensitive Malnad region, home to diverse flora and fauna.
Forest authorities are continuing coordinated monitoring of the area to prevent further poaching attempts. The operation underscores the vigilance of local forest staff in safeguarding Karnataka’s wildlife.
