New Delhi: Ms Shobha Gupta, a 1990-batch officer of the Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES), officially assumed charge as the Director General of Defence Estates (DGDE) on September 30, 2025.
With over three decades of service, Shobha Gupta brings to the role a wealth of experience and a track record of distinguished service in defence land administration and cantonment governance. Her appointment comes at a critical time as the Directorate General of Defence Estates plays a crucial role in managing vast defence land assets and supporting civic administration in cantonment areas across India.
Distinguished Career Across Commands and Cantonments
Throughout her illustrious career, Smt. Gupta has held numerous key appointments, including –
- Chief Executive Officer of several Cantonment Boards
- Defence Estates Officer across various Circles
- Director, Defence Estates, Central Command
- Principal Director, Defence Estates for both South-West Command and Western Command
She is widely respected for her professional competence, integrity, and dynamic leadership, qualities that are expected to bring strategic direction and administrative strength to the DGDE.
About the Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE)
The Directorate General of Defence Estates functions under the Ministry of Defence and is responsible for the management of approximately 18 lakh acres of defence land across the country. Its administrative network includes:
- 6 Regional Commands
- 38 Defence Estates Circles
- 61 Cantonment Boards
The DGDE plays a dual role – managing defence land and overseeing civic administration in cantonments, including infrastructure, sanitation, and public health services.
