Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police Training Directorate, under the leadership of ADG Navneet Sikera, is set to revolutionize police physical training by introducing the Smart PT Program‑2025, replacing the outdated physical training drill that has been in use since 1970.
Outdated Training Causing Injuries and Limitations
For decades, new recruits underwent physically demanding drills, including parades carrying rifles weighing over five kilograms. Despite completing this training, many officers have struggled with injuries and limited physical capability in the field. Some injuries, such as knee and back pain, have continued to trouble officers even after years of service.
New Program Focuses on Injury Prevention and Fitness
ADG Navneet Sikera highlighted that these traditional training methods often resulted in severe injuries, adversely affecting police performance and morale. To address this, the new program focuses on scientifically designed, muscle-based exercises that emphasize injury prevention, overall fitness, and agility.
Key Features of Smart PT Program‑2025
The Smart PT Program‑2025 introduces a comprehensive approach that includes:
- Mandatory warm-up and stretching exercises before training
- A balanced regimen targeting upper, middle, and lower body muscles
- Cool-down exercises to aid recovery
- Running drills ranging from 100 meters to 10 kilometers, taught with a focus on correct technique and pacing
- Nutritional guidance promoting protein-rich diets and healthy eating habits
- Use of QR codes that provide trainees with video tutorials to ensure exercises are performed correctly
- Engagement of 32 specially trained health coaches to oversee fitness and injury prevention
Modernizing Police Fitness for Enhanced Readiness
This initiative replaces the traditional physical training drill, which was mainly parade-centric and often led to chronic injuries, limiting the operational effectiveness of officers. The new program aims to prepare police personnel to be as agile and resilient as commandos.
Holistic Approach to Health and Performance
In addition to physical training, the program stresses the importance of hydration, balanced nutrition, and scientifically guided exercise routines to enhance overall health and readiness.
A New Benchmark for Police Training in India
With this modernization, Uttar Pradesh Police hope to improve the physical fitness and combat readiness of every officer, reduce training-related injuries, and set a new benchmark for police training across the country.
