Gandhinagar: The historic Shree Somnath Mahadev Jyotirlinga, a symbol of India’s cultural pride and enduring faith, is once again the center of grand festivities as the “Somnath Swabhiman Parv” commenced today and will continue until January 11, 2026. The festival is not just a religious observance but also a tribute to Somnath’s thousand-year saga of struggle, sacrifice, and triumph, ensuring the younger generation understands the temple’s rich history.

A Thousand-Year Saga of Struggle and Resilience
The history of Somnath stands as a testimony to the victory of creation over destruction. Since Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni’s attack in 1026 AD, the temple has endured repeated invasions. Despite these challenges, heroes of India defended Somnath, often laying down their lives, preserving faith and culture. The festival honors the sacrifices of martyrs, including Hamirji Gohil and Vegdaji Bhil, reminding devotees of their ancestors’ resilience and courage.
Pilgrims Share Touching Reflections
Several pilgrims shared their emotional experiences during the inaugural day:
- Deepakbhai Dave (Rajkot):
“We have not come merely to take a train ride and have darshan; we have come to pay tribute to our glorious history. Despite numerous attacks on Somnath, its majestic shikhara stands tall today, reflecting the enduring vibrancy of our culture. Through the government’s organisation of this ‘Swabhiman Parv,’ we have been given the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the thousand-year saga of Somnath’s struggles.” - Devang Jani (Young Devotee – Surendranagar):
“The direct train from Rajkot made our journey easier. Seeing how Sardar Patel restored this temple and how today Prime Minister Narendra Modi is developing it into a world-class site, it feels that our self-respect is truly being honoured today.” - Mr. Jagdishbhai Parmar (Rajkot):
“By joining the Swabhiman Parv here, I realised how many people sacrificed for Somnath. By providing train facilities, the government has allowed us to connect with this great heritage. We are grateful to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and the government for this.”
Festival Programs and Upcoming Days
Over the next three days, various programs will showcase the history and cultural significance of Somnath, highlighting its reconstruction and the perseverance of Indian heritage. Devotees from Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara will also arrive via special trains to take part in the celebrations.
