Hyderabad: In a rare and significant move, the Central Government has approved a seven-month extension for Telangana Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao (IAS: 1991: TG), allowing him to continue in office until March 31, 2026. Mr Rao was originally scheduled to retire on August 31, 2025, but will now remain at the helm of state administration until the end of the current financial year.
The extension was granted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in response to a request by the Telangana state government made on July 30. The decision was taken by relaxing provisions under the All India Services (DCRB) Rules, 1958, and invoking the AIS (CS-RM) Rules, 1960.
First-Ever Single Extension of Seven Months in Telangana
This marks the first time since the formation of Telangana that a Chief Secretary has been given a seven-month extension at one go. Notably, the state’s first Chief Secretary, Rajiv Sharma, was given a total extension of six months, but in two phases. K. Ramakrishna Rao’s extension surpasses that in both duration and manner.
Centre’s Confidence and Bureaucratic Diplomacy at Play
Sources indicate that IAS Rao’s extension reflects his strong rapport with the Centre and his instrumental role in resolving reorganisation-related issues between Telangana and the Union Government. Over the past year, he has made multiple visits to New Delhi, holding extensive meetings with the Union Home Ministry and DoPT – particularly on staff bifurcation matters.
His effectiveness in handling sensitive negotiations and presenting Telangana’s case at the national level is said to have been key factors behind the Centre’s approval for an extended tenure.
Political Ripples and Administrative Implications
The extension has stirred political conversations in the state, with observers questioning the unusual nature of a seven-month term – especially when such extensions typically last three to six months. Some political analysts interpret this move as a reflection of Delhi’s confidence in Rao’s leadership at a crucial juncture for Telangana’s governance and administration.
The decision also ensures continuity in administrative leadership through the end of the fiscal year, which is often critical for budget finalizations, policy rollouts, and fiscal reviews.

Mr Rao, known for his efficiency and problem-solving skills, has played a key role in navigating Telangana through various challenges since taking over the Chief Secretary post. His prior contributions to fiscal management, infrastructure planning, and inter-governmental coordination have earned him recognition across bureaucratic and political circles.
