Ranchi: Jharkhand is set to witness a major boost in air connectivity after the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the revamped UDAN 2.0 (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. The initiative aims to develop 100 new airports across India, bringing significant benefits to the state, especially Ranchi.
UDAN 2.0 to Transform Regional Air Connectivity
The UDAN 2.0 scheme is designed to enhance regional connectivity and make air travel more accessible and affordable. With a budget allocation of ₹28,840 crore, the scheme will be implemented from FY 2026-27 to 2035-36, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The development of new airports and routes is expected to improve connectivity in underserved and remote areas, including several parts of Jharkhand.
Ranchi Airport to Become Regional Aviation Hub
According to Ranchi Airport Director Vinod Kumar, the scheme will significantly expand the state’s aviation network. The Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, already the busiest airport in Jharkhand, is expected to evolve into a regional aviation hub in the coming years.
He stated that improved connectivity will not only benefit passengers but also strengthen economic activities across the region.
Focus on Bokaro and Dhalbhumgarh Airports
Under the UDAN 2.0 initiative, special emphasis will be placed on developing:
- Bokaro Airport – An important industrial hub
- Dhalbhumgarh Airport – Strategically significant for eastern Jharkhand and tourism
These developments are expected to improve accessibility to industrial zones and tourist destinations, thereby accelerating regional growth.
Boost to Trade, Investment, and Tourism
The expansion of air connectivity is likely to drive business, investment, and tourism in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities across Jharkhand. Improved logistics will benefit industries, while easier access will attract more tourists to the state’s natural and cultural destinations.
Experts believe that enhanced air infrastructure will strengthen Jharkhand’s position as an emerging destination for both investors and travelers.
Land Constraints Affecting Ranchi Airport Expansion
Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. Vinod Kumar highlighted that land availability issues are delaying several key expansion projects at Ranchi Airport.
Important works such as:
- Runway expansion
- Taxiway development
- CAT-II lighting system
are currently impacted due to the lack of land allocation by the district administration. Resolving these issues will be crucial for fully realizing the benefits of the UDAN 2.0 scheme.
A Step Towards Inclusive Growth
The approval of UDAN 2.0 marks a significant step toward improving regional connectivity and promoting inclusive development in Jharkhand. With better air links, the state is poised to witness growth in infrastructure, tourism, and economic opportunities in the coming decade.
