Uttar Pradesh is taking a major leap in its technology-driven development journey with the proposed establishment of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) City in Lucknow, a flagship initiative aimed at positioning the state as a global hub for advanced digital technologies. Envisioned under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the project is expected to significantly boost economic growth, employment generation, and innovation capacity in the state.
The Chief Minister has reiterated the government’s commitment to the AI City in a letter addressed to the public, underlining its strategic importance in Uttar Pradesh’s long-term development roadmap. Officials say the project will serve as a cornerstone of the state’s ambition to become a USD 1 trillion economy over the next five years, with Artificial Intelligence and IT-ITeS sectors acting as key growth engines.
Two-Phase Development with Dedicated Core Zone
According to the proposed plan, the AI City will be developed in two phases. Nearly 60 percent of the total area will form the core zone, dedicated exclusively to advanced AI infrastructure. This zone will house AI innovation centres, technology parks, high-end research and development facilities, and global-standard workspaces for technology companies.
The remaining 40 percent of the area will be developed as a supporting ecosystem, including residential spaces, commercial hubs, social infrastructure, and essential urban amenities, ensuring a self-sustained and integrated technology city.
Public-Private Partnership Model
The project is planned to be executed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, combining government facilitation with private sector investment and expertise. Officials believe this model will ensure timely execution, financial viability, and global competitiveness while maintaining public oversight.
“The objective is to create a world-class AI ecosystem where Indian and international companies can innovate, collaborate, and scale their operations seamlessly,” a senior government official said.
Global-Scale Infrastructure and Innovation Ecosystem
The Lucknow AI City will feature state-of-the-art data centres, high-performance computing systems, AI research laboratories, startup incubation and acceleration centres, and plug-and-play infrastructure for global technology firms. The government aims to bring multiple AI-driven sectors—such as healthcare, agriculture, governance, fintech, and smart cities—under one integrated platform.
The long-term goal is to position Lucknow among the world’s top 20 AI hubs, attracting global investments and cutting-edge research projects.
Leveraging Lucknow’s Academic Strength
Lucknow’s growing academic and technological ecosystem is expected to play a pivotal role in the success of the AI City. Prestigious institutions such as IIM Lucknow and IIIT Lucknow are already contributing to research, innovation, and skill development in emerging technologies.
Experts believe the AI City will work in close coordination with these institutions to create a strong talent pipeline, promote industry-academia collaboration, and prepare a future-ready workforce aligned with global technology demands.
Employment Generation and Youth Opportunities
The AI City is projected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities across multiple skill levels. IT professionals, data scientists, engineers, researchers, startup founders, and support service providers are expected to benefit from the initiative.
Importantly, the project is seen as a major opportunity for local youth, offering high-quality employment within the state and reducing migration to other technology hubs. Startups and entrepreneurs from Uttar Pradesh are also expected to gain access to world-class infrastructure and mentorship.
Focus on Sustainable Development
Officials said the AI City will be developed on a green and sustainable model, incorporating energy-efficient infrastructure, smart mobility solutions, and environmentally responsible urban planning.
With this ambitious initiative, Uttar Pradesh is signaling its intent to move beyond traditional growth models and firmly establish itself as a key player in the global digital economy.
