Bareilly: In a strong step towards enhancing women’s safety and empowerment, Bareilly Police has launched the ‘Veerangna Unit’, a Women’s Special Operations Group (SOG) comprising specially trained female commandos. The unit was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during his visit to the district on Wednesday, officially marking its deployment.
The initiative reflects the district police’s evolving approach towards community-oriented policing and zero tolerance for crimes against women.

Led by IPS Anshika Verma, Eight Lady Constables Form Core Commando Team
The Veerangna Unit has been placed under the leadership of SP South Anshika Verma, who played a pivotal role in its formation and training. A total of eight women constables have been selected and given specialised training in:
- Weapons handling
- Martial arts
- Self-defence
- Surveillance
- Crime analysis
These women officers will also assist in patrolling high-sensitivity areas and supporting special drives related to women’s safety and law enforcement.
“The Veerangna Unit will not only help enforce law and order but will also serve as a symbol of inspiration and strength for the daughters of Bareilly,” said SP South Anshika Verma.
A Vision for Empowerment and Security
The Veerangna Unit’s primary objective is to build public confidence, especially among women, by ensuring visible and effective policing. It also aims to:
Ensure active participation of women personnel in maintaining law and order
Deliver a strong deterrent message to offenders
Act as a medium of empowerment and inspiration for women and young girls
Verma stressed that the initiative is not merely a policing upgrade but a social statement—that women are capable of leading on every front when provided the right opportunities.

Future Expansion on the Cards
The current unit will serve as the first phase of the initiative, with the potential to scale up in the near future.
“This is a milestone for the district. Veerangna will become a cornerstone of Bareilly’s women’s safety ecosystem,” said a senior police official.
The unit is also expected to engage in public outreach, participate in awareness campaigns, and offer support to victims of gender-based violence.
