The state was officially formed on January 24, 1950, when the name United Provinces was changed to Uttar Pradesh. Until the year 2000, present-day Uttarakhand was also part of Uttar Pradesh. In 2000, the hilly regions of Kumaon and Garhwal were separated and given statehood as Uttaranchal, which was later renamed Uttarakhand.
