UP Diwas 2026: Uttar Pradesh Celebrates 76th Foundation Day, Leaders Highlight State’s Growth and Cultural Legacy

Marking January 24, 1950, as its formation day, Uttar Pradesh celebrates UP Diwas with messages from the President, PM Modi, and other leaders, calling the state India’s cultural heart and a key growth engine.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is celebrating its 76th Foundation Day (UP Diwas) today, January 24, 2026. The state was officially formed on January 24, 1950, when the name United Provinces was changed to Uttar Pradesh. Every year, this day is marked to honor the state’s rich history, culture, and contribution to India’s development.

Why January 24 Is Important for Uttar Pradesh

January 24 holds special importance for Uttar Pradesh as it marks the day when the state got its present name and identity. Until the year 2000, present-day Uttarakhand was also part of Uttar Pradesh. In 2000, the hilly regions of Kumaon and Garhwal were separated and given statehood as Uttaranchal, which was later renamed Uttarakhand.

Brief History of Uttar Pradesh

  • 1807: Known as Ceded and Conquered Provinces
  • 1834: Renamed Agra Presidency
  • 1836: Became North-Western Provinces
  • 1902: Merged as United Provinces of Agra and Oudh
  • 1946: Shortened to United Provinces
  • 1950: Renamed Uttar Pradesh
  • 2000: Formation of Uttarakhand from its hill regions

Uttar Pradesh Diwas was officially celebrated for the first time in 2018.

President Droupadi Murmu’s Message

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the people of Uttar Pradesh on UP Diwas. In her message, she said that Uttar Pradesh, with its glorious history and rich culture, has been a strong pillar of India’s development journey. She expressed confidence that the state will continue to move forward on the path of progress and wished a bright future for its hardworking and talented people.

PM Narendra Modi: From BIMARU to a Remarkable State

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the people of Uttar Pradesh, praising the state’s contribution to Indian culture and heritage. He said that under the double-engine government, Uttar Pradesh has transformed over the last nine years from a BIMARU state to a remarkable development model. He expressed strong belief that Uttar Pradesh will play a key role in driving India’s future growth.

Amit Shah Highlights Cultural Strength and Infrastructure Growth

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also wished the people of Uttar Pradesh. He described the state as a land enriched by Sanatan culture and blessed by the Ganga and Yamuna. He said that Uttar Pradesh has always guided the nation through culture, strength, and resolve, and is now setting new benchmarks in development and world-class infrastructure.

CM Yogi Adityanath Calls UP India’s Growth Engine

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended special greetings to Non-Resident Uttar Pradesh citizens across the world. He said that their hard work and values have enhanced the image of both Uttar Pradesh and India globally. He added that the state has broken free from past struggles and policy neglect, emerging as India’s growth engine with immense future potential.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s Wishes

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Uttar Pradesh represents a powerful symbol of India’s nature and culture. He noted that the state has been writing new chapters of good governance and development for the past nine years and wished continued progress for the people of Uttar Pradesh.
