Varanasi: In a significant move to enhance disaster preparedness and public safety, the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is taking a major step to strengthen fire and emergency response services in the state’s cultural capital, Varanasi. Following directives to modernize the fire services, the government has approved the appointment of a Joint Director of Fire Services for the Varanasi Zone, who will oversee emergency preparedness and disaster response across ten districts.
The new Joint Director will supervise a specially trained rescue group that will serve as the first responder in emergencies, including natural disasters, fires, chemical and biological hazards, and high-rise building incidents. The government has given in-principle approval for this initiative under the Uttar Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services Rules, 2024. This move is expected to add a new dimension to the safety and security of citizens in the Varanasi Zone.
Specially Trained Rescue Group to Act as First Responders
The rescue group, functioning under the supervision of the Joint Director, will be prepared to respond immediately to emergencies and disasters. Equipped with advanced tools and modern technology, the team will handle relief, evacuation, and safety operations efficiently. The Chief Fire Officer of Varanasi Zone, Anand Singh Rajput, explained that the creation of this elite unit aims to make the city and surrounding districts more resilient against unforeseen emergencies.
The team will be trained in modern rescue techniques and will act as a first responder during any crisis, ensuring minimal loss of life and property. The establishment of this group demonstrates the state government’s commitment to integrating modern disaster management strategies with citizen safety.
Monitoring Across Ten Districts
The newly appointed Joint Director will directly supervise ten districts under the Varanasi Zone: Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Azamgarh, Mau, Ballia, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, and Sonbhadra. In any emergency, the rescue team will reach the site immediately to manage rescue and relief operations efficiently.
The Joint Director will hold a senior-level position equivalent to that of a Senior Superintendent of Police and will manage the specially trained rescue group, which will include:
- Fire Officer Second Grade – 1
- Leading Fireman – 2
- Fire Service Driver – 2
- Fireman – 16
- Cook – 1
Until now, emergency operations in the Varanasi Zone were managed under the supervision of the Chief Fire Officer. The new structure is designed to bring more specialized, efficient, and coordinated response during disasters.
A Step Toward Modernized Emergency Management
This initiative is part of the broader vision of the UP government to ensure citizen safety and disaster readiness alongside infrastructure development. With Varanasi hosting year-round religious events and a steady influx of tourists, having a dedicated rescue group under a Joint Director ensures a proactive approach to public safety and emergency management.
