In a landmark step toward international academic collaboration and youth development, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to launch the Chevening–Atal Bihari Vajpayee UP Government Scholarship Scheme.
The MoU was signed on Tuesday at the official residence of Chief Minister Mr. Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow. Under this agreement, five deserving students from Uttar Pradesh will receive fully funded scholarships annually for the next three academic years to pursue one-year master’s programmes at leading universities in the UK.
Scholarships to Cover Full Academic and Living Costs
The scholarships will provide comprehensive coverage, including tuition fees, research and examination charges, living expenses, and international airfare. Each scholarship is estimated to cost between £38,000 and £42,000 (Rs. 45 to 48 lakh). The Uttar Pradesh government will contribute approximately £19,800 (Rs. 23 lakh) per student, while the UK government, through the FCDO, will finance the remaining portion.
A Vision for Global Youth Leadership from Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mr. Yogi Adityanath highlighted that this initiative is designed to equip Uttar Pradesh’s youth with the knowledge, skills, and global exposure required to assume leadership roles internationally. He described the scholarship as a strategic investment in human capital that will empower the state’s youth and elevate Uttar Pradesh’s presence on the global stage.
“This scholarship programme will provide opportunities for academic excellence, research, and leadership on an international scale,” Mr. Adityanath stated. “It will give Uttar Pradesh’s youth the global exposure they need to excel.”
Strengthening India–UK Educational and Strategic Ties
British High Commissioner to India, Ms. Lindy Cameron, who was present at the MoU signing, emphasized that the initiative reflects the growing educational and strategic ties between India and the UK.
“It is a privilege to sign this MoU in Lucknow. Over the next three years, five students annually from UP will study in the UK on full scholarships. This reflects our deepening partnership, following recent agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UK visit,” Ms. Cameron noted.
A Step Toward Internationalization of Higher Education
This joint scholarship initiative not only reinforces bilateral cooperation but also aligns with the broader vision of internationalizing higher education in Indian states. The scheme serves as a model for other Indian states to expand academic and leadership opportunities abroad through global partnerships.
Chief Minister Mr. Adityanath also called on students to make the most of this prestigious opportunity and contribute to enhancing the prestige of Uttar Pradesh and India at the global level.
