Upset Over Lateral Entry Recruitment, Opposition Demands Review of 57 Past Appointments

In a significant political reversal, the government has called for the cancellation of 45 new lateral entry recruitment processes initiated by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This decision comes in the wake of intense opposition criticism and growing solidarity from various political factions.

The controversy centers around the government’s recent efforts to recruit personnel through a lateral entry system, bypassing traditional recruitment routes. The opposition has accused the government of flouting constitutional provisions, specifically Article 16(A) of the Indian Constitution, which mandates equality of opportunity in public employment and adherence to reservation policies.

Opposition leaders have argued that the recruitment process for these lateral entries neglected the rules of reservation, which are designed to ensure fair representation of marginalized communities, including Dalits, backward classes, Muslims, and tribal groups. They have demanded an immediate review of the 57 lateral entries made in the past, claiming that these appointments undermined the talent of Indian youth and failed to meet reservation requirements.

“The lack of transparency and adherence to reservation norms in these appointments is a grave injustice,” said an opposition spokesperson. “The government must provide a detailed account of how many of the 57 lateral recruits belong to reserved categories. If these provisions were not followed, corrective action must be taken.”

In response to the opposition’s demands, the UPSC has officially canceled the 45 new recruitment processes, acknowledging the concerns raised. The government is expected to address the issue in detail and outline measures to ensure compliance with reservation policies in future recruitments.

The debate over lateral entry recruitment underscores ongoing tensions between the government and opposition regarding employment practices and constitutional adherence. As the political discourse continues, the focus remains on ensuring that recruitment processes uphold fairness and inclusivity as mandated by the Constitution.
